Ill keep trying, though, because this film seems to b a keeper, one that may enetertain me anytime I watch it. Two of the best comic actors of their time with a great script and a superb supporting cast. In today's world long after the Code has been repealed, Auer might well have been more explicitly gay. This one is a classic. At the time this film was made there was a lot of buzz about Powell working with Carole Lombard who only a few years earlier he had been married to.
They are bored, idle rich with no sense of propriety who amuse themselves any way they feel like. A wealthy family attends a raucous party. She rarely if ever says a word she doesn't mean or does an action betraying what she really thinks. This, film, along with the aforementioned films Lady for a Day, You Can Take It with You, and Holiday is one of the greatest films that nobody ever heard of. Soon, the dramatizing Irene is in love with her 'protege'.
These are themes, and there are probably a few others. They had many of the same mental and physical challenges that our service men and women today suffer. Kaufman's name on it, or a Preston Sturgess film. The Bullock family has enormous freedom to do as they wish, which they take full advantage of, to the dismay of Mr. I, too, enjoy this film. Eugene Pallette, a horrid man in real life whose bigotry eventually ended his film career, was much beloved for his on-screen character -- essentially the same one in all of his later films.
Bells and whistles go off and cannons roar and peace and joy reign all throughout the land! I say 'terrible,' but it's only terrible because we've seen it countless times since the 1930's; it may have been fresh then. I enjoyed this film, even if sometimes the sound is a little bit noisy mostly at the hotel. It's a favorite of mine as the comedy is ripe with some great zingers but the film itself also has a lot of heart. In the film we are given, on the one hand, what appears to be a city dump near to Sutton Place, one of the richest areas in Manhattan. Cornelia is interesting, since she's, next to Godfrey, or maybe even excelling Godfrey, the most authentic character in the film. This is a wonderful film that manages to show the sadness and rough times brought on by the depression as well as plenty of comedy.
It is possible to be serious about helping human kind and be somewhat light hearted and entertaining! You'll wonder why the latter play is considered one of Shakespeare's best after having read the former in all its glory. If you're out there, look for the lady who sings at City Hall Meetings, who dances in glee amidst the fascists, who watches Carole and William Powell for inspiration!!! We have watched it four times and still catch new things. One of the girls in the family, ultra-dippy Carole Lombard, arranges for him to become their new butler and he is absolutely perfect at his job in every way and does a lot to get this rich but totally flighty family to function well, as when the movie starts it is like a madhouse instead of a family home. I loved how he handled himself among the people he grew to like and appreciate, as I did. The actors are also in top form. Summary for the movie In the depths of the Depression, a party game brings dizzy socialite Irene Bullock to the city dump where she meets Godfrey, a derelict, and ends by hiring him as family butler.
Even as most scenes are simple small room or location setups, the big party scene in the beginning, for example, features a lot of great spacial effects with sound effects and voices crowding around while still maintaining distinct placement. Today if the number reaches above five percent the doomsayers are calling it a depression. Irene has an infatuation on Godfrey and protects him while Cornelia hates him and wants to harm him.
Films such as Bringing Up Baby and The Lady Eve perfected the form, but My Man Godfrey is nearly as perfect. Great story, nice acting and direction. Irene offers the position of butler to Godfrey and tells her parents Alexander Eugene Palette and Angelica Bullock Alice Brady that she has hired Godfrey to work for their dysfunctional family in their mansion. It's not all happy, though. But William Powell is sooo perfect.
Godfrey excels at his job and before long has become an invaluable part of the household, as well as the object of Irene's affections. Like all of Powell's performances, it looks effortless, but it's brilliant. On account of this aspect of comedy, for better or for worse, the themes involved are simple and take very little scavenger hunting to discover. Both actors exuded charisma in any film they graced with their charming presence. I am a great admirer of Preston Sturges and this looks for all the world like one of the great progenitors of his masterpiece 'Sullivan's Travels'.

This is a classic film that will live forever. The film is definitely a 10. They're interesting studies, to say the least. Nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Actor William Powell, Best Actress Carole Lombard, Supporting Actor Mischa Auer, and Actress Alice Brady, My Man Godfrey somehow failed to win a single award.
They call it a screwball comedy, which is fair enough. I'm not one of those viewers who loves modern comedies like Adam Sandler stuff. His peace is suddenly disrupted one fateful night by the Bullock sisters, Irene Carole Lombard and Cornelia Gail Patrick , who each need a 'forgotten man' to win their scavenger hunt. All the rest are as nutty as ever. I can't think of any really great comedies of the past ten years. Oops, I guess I slipped back into theory again.
